Most people go through life experiencing a sinus infection at one time or another. This condition can be quite painful, and sometimes a bit scary if you don’t know what is going on. A sinus infection, or acute or chronic sinusitis, as they are medically termed, is caused by infections. When the membranes in the sinuses, throat, and nose, get swollen, they block the sinus which means that mucus is prevented from draining out properly. This causes en environment that is perfect for an infection, and when the sinuses become infected, pus fills up and lead to a host of common symptoms, including yellowish discharge, congestion of the nose, aching in the teeth, jaw, and head. These are just some of the symptoms you might experience if you have a sinus infection.
Most sinus infections go over by themselves, but if you experience prolonged symptoms it is important that you visit your doctor. Cures for sinus infection include antibiotics and immunotherapy. The latter cure is prescribed when allergies are the cause of the condition. If you start to experience chronic sinus infections, surgery might be recommended by your doctor.
There are several home cures that might help, though “cure” might not be the correct term as they won’t be as effective as medicine, but might lessen your symptoms. Plenty of rest and sufficient fluids goes with out saying. Some people suggest a steam bath, where you drape a towel over you head while you breath hot air from a bowl. Of course, this shouldn’t be a substitute for visiting your doctor if the symptoms become severe.
Homeopathic remedies are also popular, but they are not cures in the sense that they are not approved by the FDA. These include the common steam bath, but with special extracts blended in, like garlic and tree oil.
