A Memory Foam Bed Topper is a layer of specially constructed foam that you place on top of your existing mattress. The greatest benefit in using a memory foam bed topper over a memory foam mattress is cost. Foam mattresses will cost many times that of a mattress topper. But is this a false economy?
Well, if you take a look at a memory foam mattress and were able to slice it down the middle, you would see that only the top 3 inches or so is actually made up of memory foam. The remainder of the mattress is in fact there just to act as a base for the memory foam.
If you purchase a good quality memory foam bed topper, it will do exactly the same job as a full mattress as all of the benefit lies in the top few inches of foam.
It is important however that the base mattress you place your memory foam mattress topper on is in reasonable condition, ideally a little on the firm site. Placing it on a lumpy or saggy mattress will significantly reduce the benefit.
A memory foam bed topper will come in a variety of different thicknesses, usually between 1 and 4 inches and also in a variety of different foam densities all of which will have an impact on the performance of the mattress.
