The history of Halloween itself can be a very frightening thing and a great deal of it has to do with the imagination. Add to it a lawn full of artifacts to represent the occasion and any house can be transformed into a regular haunting ground. It is certainly one of the holidays that excites children in the extreme and although they often try to deny it, adults as well. It may be the only time of the year in which they are allowed to costume and then consume that much candy at one sitting. Trick-or-treating and costumes are only part of the fun because every child wants to collect candy from the elaborately decorated home, it is in the spirit of celebration.
Glancing toward it, there is a feeling of hesitation and even a small amount of dread. Although the feet do not want to carry the body forward, the mind is trying to reassure them that it is only Halloween. Strolling along the walk toward the house, looking to the left and right, there are ghosts suspended from the trees. They are creating an eerie swishing sound as they are tossed about in the wind that seems to have started blowing harder in the past few minutes. Stepping to the left to avoid the ghost then causes the mistake of tripping on the outstretched hands of the creature buried there beneath the tombstone in the yard. Looking up, it is hard not to notice that the gateway holds a cemetery sign and the gate is lined with small skulls. A graveyard fence and tombstones stand to each side of the path that must be taken in order to reach the prize. The light flashing at the nearby tree is indicating someone or something standing behind it, but the shape cannot be made out in the distance. Cobwebs with huge spiders cover the view of the open doorway and the safety that lies within. The type of candy at this residence does not seem as important as reaching the light located on the porch. While making a mad dash past the tree for the porch, one can’t help noticing that the jack-o-lanterns lining the steps all seem to be laughing as both outstretched hands are filled with candy bars; it was worth the trip.
